Chinese herbal pillow
The following recipe is for a Chinese herbal pillow. It can be used for those suffering from headaches of various patterns but especially those associated with blood stasis. The ingredients in this formula quicken the blood and dispel stasis. Grind the following medicinals into powder and sew them into a small, flat cotton bag just big enough to lay the head upon:
Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui), 2 parts
Radix Et Rhizoma Notopterygii (Qiang Huo), 1 part
Radix Ligustici Wallichii (Chuan Xiong), 2 parts
Radix Lateralis Praeparatus Aconiti Carmichaeli (Fu Zi), ½ part
Radix Aconiti (Chuan Wu), ½ part
Radix Et Rhizoma Ligustici Chinensis (Gao Ben), 1 part
Radix Rubrus Paeoniae Lactiflorae (Chi Shao), 1 part
Flos Carthami Tinctorii (Hong Hua), 1 part
Lumbricus (Di Long), 1 part
Sanguis Draconis (Xue Jie), 1 part
Rhizoma Acori Graminei (Shi Chang Pu), 1 part
Medulla Junci (Deng Xin Cao), 1 part
Herba Asari Cum Radice (Xi Xin), ½ part
Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae (Gui Zhi), 1 part
Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (Dan Shen), 1 part
Radix Ledebouriellae Divaricatae (Fang Feng), 1 part

Radix Clematidis Chinensis (Wei Ling Xian), 1 part
Resina Olibani (Ru Xiang), 1 part
Resina Myrrhae (Mo Yao), 1 part
Borneolum (Bing Pian), _ part
One can then sleep on this pillow every night, placing that part of the head where the pain is the worst on top of the pillow. This formula is for external use only. It is not meant for internal administration. See below for information on ordering Chinese herbs.

Poultices & plasters
Below are a selection of one, two, and three ingredient Chinese herbal poultices and plasters for the treatment of various types of headaches. They are reasonably easy to make, relatively safe, and quite effective. If any of them cause skin irritation or blistering, discontinue their use immediately.

For liver yang headaches, one can take some Fructus Evodiae Rutecarpae (Wu Zhu Yu) and grind it into powder. Then mix some of this powder with a little vinegar. Make into a paste and apply to Yong Quan (Kidney 1) on the soles of the feet.
