The hermit Lieh-tzu, a Chinese philosopher of the 4th century BCE, is considered one of the three greatest Taoist philosophers. The stories and musings collected in this work of the same name were contributed over a period of 600 years. They deal with the concerns and problems relevant to anyone on the path of self realization: life and death, fortune and misfortune, gain and loss, friendship, human communication, dreams, reality, learning. The stories exaggerate the ridiculous aspects of human actions, portraying the human condition with the kind of humor that encourages us to laugh at ourselves. Wong has completed an admirable task in presenting an adaptation that allows the Western reader a continuity of presentation that is both accessible and inspiring.
